There is a lot of specialized hardware out there with CPU (or GPU) dumps, but sometimes the pc or laptop is the only option. In addition, with the scarcity and increasing cost of graphics cards for cryptocurrency mining, many miners have turned their gaze to laptops or notebooks with powerful graphics processing cards or GPUs like the one I show below.
Be careful, this does not mean that we have to buy a super-laptop to start, we can do it with any equipment we have and go testing. Sure, the most profitable thing will always be to buy powerful hardware, but we can start experimenting with what we have on hand.
Here I will explain in the most summarized and concrete way possible, how to do mining without detours.
1) Select the cryptocurrency
Here I am not going to go into details because there is a lot of debate about it. The prices are very fluctuating. Although there are well-known coins such as Bitcoin or EthereumThey are not necessarily the best future bets, or at least no one knows for sure. In this article we will focus on a currency that has caused quite a stir recently: the DOGECOIN.
2) Install a cryptocurrency wallet
If we are going to mine crypto we will need where to store what we have mined. There are tons of free options in software format, which can be installed on our computer and there is also specialized hardware. Here we will use free software so we will NOT deal with hardware wallets, but if anyone is interested in this option, I highly recommend the Ledger Nano S, which supports dozens of cryptocurrencies. I leave a link to Amazon.
As we are going to mine DOGECOIN my recommendation is to use the official DOGECOIN wallet, it is free and can be downloaded from the official site of the coin dogecoin.com. There are two versions, a more “light” option called Multidoge and a more complete option called Dogecoin Core. For our purpose, it does not matter which one we download. I will go for the Dogecoin Core option.
After installing we must locate the address of our wallet. Yes, each wallet has an address. In this way, when we want someone to pay us, we give them the address to send us the money there, similarly to when we use Paypal and we give them the Paypal address. In Dogecoin Core the address can be found in the File or File menu.
3) Choose a mining pool. What is this?
Well, what happens is that many times getting a reward for mining cryptocurrencies is very difficult. For this reason, users are organized into groups and among all are divided into the task of mining. These user groups are called pools. The pool that we will use here has been named Unmineable and we found it this link unmineable.com.
What we are interested in knowing about the pool is the mining address for Dogecoin, so we write "dogecoin" in the search box that appears on the main screen and click on the Dogecoin logo that appears.
Once the currency we are looking for has been selected, a screen appears where we are asked to choose a mining algorithm, we choose RandomX and then we write down the mining address, which we will need later. It looks something like the following figure. That looks something like rx.unmineable.com:3333
4) Now yes, to mine!
Well, not so fast, you have to download a mining algorithm first. There are many, but the one we are going to use here is XMRIG and the site where we can download the mining software is this:
https://github.com/xmrig/xmrig/releases
From there we download the software depending on our operating system.
XMRIG has to be configured before running. For this we see that in the downloaded folder there is a file called config.json. We open this file from any text editor such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac OS and we modify the following 3 lines, which are highlighted in the figure below.
Parameter "something" has to be configured with the somethingrate of mining, hence its name. We will write "rx / 0", which corresponds to the RandomX algorithm selected in step 3.
In the parameter "Url" We configure the address of the mining pool, which we also obtained in step 3.
Parameter "User" It is configured with a text that begins with the word DOGE, because we are going to mine Dogecoins, then the colon character and then the address of our wallet, which we obtained in step 2. At the end we write a point and any name to identify the machine from where we are mining. I have set neomanocom, but it can be anything.
5) Run the mining software
Now let's mine!… It's as simple as running the software we downloaded. This is what it looks like on my machine. It is not visually very nice, but that is not what you are looking for, the simpler the better, since it will use less system resources unnecessarily.
6) How long have I been mined?
In the end, but not least. To verify how long we have mined, we return to the page of unmineable.com and in the drawer where it says "Enter your address to check your stats" we enter the address of our wallet. We will start to see our earnings here! 😉
Before finishing I tell you that, based on this article, I made a short video that I posted on YouTube. I invite you to see it.
