Every time a program crashes we say it has a bug, and fixing it we call debugging. The most repeated story is charming: in 1947, computing pioneer Grace Hopper found a moth inside a computer, the word "bug" became a synonym for error, and that is how the term was born. It is a great anecdote, and almost everything in it is true. But there is an awkward detail usually left out: by the time that moth turned up, the word "bug" had already been buzzing around engineering workshops for decades. Grace Hopper did not invent the term. She did something perhaps more memorable: she turned it into legend.

The moth in the Mark II

The episode really happened. On September 9, 1947, a team working with the electromechanical Harvard Mark II computer in Cambridge, Massachusetts, ran into a malfunction. Inspecting the machine, they found the physical culprit: a moth trapped between the contacts of a relay (relay number 70 on panel F, to be exact). They carefully removed it and taped it into the lab's logbook, next to a note that would become famous: "First actual case of bug being found."

That logbook, with the moth still stuck to the page, is preserved today at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington. It is one of those relics that sum up a whole era: the age of room-sized computers built from thousands of mechanical relays, where a real insect could quite literally crawl in and ruin a calculation. As in the earliest days of programming, the computing of those years was as physical as it was mathematical.

The joke was that the word already existed

And here is the point the popular version glosses over. The humor of the note —the very reason someone bothered to write "first actual case of bug"— is that the word bug was already used for technical faults. Finding a genuine moth was a joke: at last a real "bug," and not a figurative one. Without that prior usage, the note would not be funny at all.

So where did "bug" come from? The word is old. In Middle English, bugge meant a spirit or hobgoblin that frightened people (the bogeyman survives from it); by the 16th century it had shifted to naming annoying insects, like bedbugs. And in the 19th century engineers adopted it as a metaphor for those small, elusive defects that sneak into any machine and are a pain to track down.

The most cited testimony comes from none other than Thomas Edison. In an 1878 letter, the inventor described "bugs" —using that very word— as the little faults and difficulties that cropped up while developing his inventions, and that demanded months of work before commercial success. Edison used the term with complete ease, a sign that it was already circulating in the technical world of his time. It is even said that the quadruplex telegraph he was working on needed a kind of "bug trap" to run properly.

In other words: nearly seventy years before the Mark II moth, "bug" already meant "engineering fault" in the mouth of one of the most famous inventors in history. By the 1940s, when Hopper and her team were working with the first computers, the term was common jargon among engineers. The moth did not create the word; it bumped into it.

So what did Grace Hopper actually do?

It is worth being fair to both the story and to her. First, a caveat: the logbook note was probably not written in Hopper's own hand —it is generally attributed to other members of the Mark II team— though she was there and adopted the episode as her own for the rest of her life. Grace Hopper was a towering figure in computing: a mathematician, a U.S. Navy officer who rose to rear admiral, and one of the minds behind the first compilers and the COBOL language. She told the moth anecdote in her talks again and again, with humor, and it was largely thanks to her that the story became famous.

Her real achievement was not coining "bug" but popularizing it and giving it an unforgettable physical symbol. She and her team also helped spread the verb debug throughout the computing world. Thanks to that anecdote told a thousand times, a word that until then was workshop slang became the universal term millions of programmers use today. As happens with other words born in the world of machines, its real origin is less tidy and more interesting than the legend.

The lesson behind the bug

The story of "bug" is a good reminder of how origin myths work: we tend to prefer a clean founding moment —a person, a date, a moth— to the fuzzier truth of a word that ripened over decades. That Grace Hopper did not invent the term takes nothing away from her; on the contrary, it reveals something more human: that sometimes the most lasting contribution is not creating something from nothing, but telling a story so well that the whole world remembers it.

So next time a program freezes and someone curses "another bug," it is worth remembering that this little "critter" carries a long past: from the hobgoblins of Middle English to Edison's workshops, and from there to a real moth taped into a notebook that now rests in a museum.
