The Ten Days of October That Never Existed
In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII erased ten days: October 4 was followed by October 15. Here is why the Julian calendar failed and the Gregorian took its place.

Leaf through European records from October 1582 and you'll find something baffling: Thursday, October 4 is followed directly by Friday, October 15. Between the two there is nothing. The 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th of that October simply did not exist: no one was born, no one died, no one signed a contract on those dates, because they never appeared on the calendar. It wasn't a disaster or a gap in the archives, but a deliberate decision to fix an error that had been piling up for more than a thousand years. It's worth understanding how a week and a half came to be erased in one stroke.
A calendar that lost eleven minutes a year
The culprit was the Julian calendar, the one Julius Caesar had imposed in 46 BC and that Europe used for over sixteen centuries. Its rule was simple and elegant: a 365-day year and a 366-day leap year every four, averaging 365.25 days. The trouble is that the real solar year is slightly shorter: about 365.2422 days. The difference seems trivial —barely eleven minutes and fourteen seconds a year— but time does not forgive anyone who lets small errors accumulate.
Eleven minutes a year add up to a full day of drift roughly every 128 years. And the Julian calendar had been running since before Christ. By the 16th century, the gap was already ten whole days. It's the same kind of silent drift that plagued the clocks of yesteryear before precision mechanics: tiny imperfections that, compounded over generations, throw everything out of alignment.
The Easter that kept sliding
A ten-day gap might sound like a minor issue —who cares if the solstice falls a day one way or another?— but for the Catholic Church it was a serious matter. The date of Easter, Christianity's central feast, is calculated from the spring equinox. The Council of Nicaea, in 325, had fixed it on March 21. But thanks to the Julian drift, by 1582 the real astronomical equinox was already falling around March 11. Easter was slowly sliding toward summer, and the whole liturgical calendar with it.
If no one intervened, in a few thousand years Christmas would have ended up in spring and Easter in the middle of August. The Church, keeper of the calendar in Christian Europe, could not let its feasts drift away from the seasons that gave them meaning.
Lilius, Clavius and a finer rule
The reform had been debated for decades, but the technical solution we owe mostly to a Calabrian physician and astronomer, Aloysius Lilius (Luigi Lilio), whose plan was refined by the German Jesuit mathematician Christopher Clavius. Their proposal had two parts. The first was drastic: drop the ten surplus days all at once to snap the equinox back into place.
The second part was more ingenious and aimed to stop the error from building up again. In the Julian calendar, every year divisible by four was a leap year, no exceptions. The new rule added a twist: years ending in "00" are leap years only if divisible by 400. So 1600 and 2000 qualified, but 1700, 1800 and 1900 did not. This removes three leap days every 400 years, bringing the average year to 365.2425 days, almost identical to the solar one. The residual error is just one day every 3,200 years: a refinement that, with simple remainder arithmetic far tidier than the clumsy Roman numerals, solved a millennial problem for centuries to come.
The bull that erased the week
On February 24, 1582, Pope Gregory XIII issued the bull Inter gravissimas, which ordered the reform and gave the new Gregorian calendar its name. October was chosen for the cut because it was a month with few major feasts, so the fewest possible saints' days would be trampled. And so, in the Catholic countries that obeyed at once —Spain, Portugal, Italy and the Poland of the day— Thursday the 4th was followed by Friday the 15th.
One thing is worth stressing so as not to overstate it: no one lost ten days of life or wages. The week ran on —the 4th was a Thursday and the 15th a Friday, with no weekday skipped— and contracts and rents were adjusted proportionally. Only some numbers vanished from the almanac. Astronomers of the stature of Kepler and Tycho Brahe applauded the correction; many Protestants, on the other hand, saw it as a papal maneuver and refused for centuries to adopt it.
Each country skipped its own week
The curious part is that the reform was not simultaneous. Every country switched when it pleased, and because the gap kept growing, each had to erase a different number of days:
- 1582: the Catholic countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland). Ten days.
- 1700: much of Protestant and German Europe.
- 1752: Great Britain and its colonies, including those that would become the United States. By then the gap was eleven days: September 2 was followed by September 14. This is the source of the famous legend of mobs shouting "give us back our eleven days!"; historians today believe those riots never happened and that the anecdote is largely a myth.
- 1918: Soviet Russia, with a gap already of thirteen days. That's why the "October Revolution" is commemorated in November on our calendar.
Sweden staged the most absurd episode: it attempted a gradual transition, botched its leap years, and in 1712 ended up with an impossible February 30 in order to return to the Julian calendar before finally adopting the Gregorian decades later.
The calendar we still use
Lilius and Clavius's system proved so accurate that it governs almost the entire planet today. When the year 2000 —divisible by 400— gave us a leap February that 1900 had not, we were unwittingly executing a rule written by a 16th-century Jesuit. So the next time you glance at a date, remember that this everyday calendar hides a scar: a week and a half of October 1582 that, officially, never existed. Like the oddity of February having only 28 days, it's one of those inheritances we drag around daily without recalling where they came from.
